Waste Management
Group Five (The Waste Group) Members:
The "Waste Group" is the fifth group formed during the Fall 2015 semester for the ENRG 3310: Introduction to Energy and Sustainability course at the University of Houston. The group consists of seven members, five which are engineering majors, one business major, and a liberal arts major. Together they have collected research to further understand Houston's waste model and how this model can change for a sustainable future. The members' names, background and responsibilities are as follows.
Elizabeth Demel
Elizabeth is a junior studying petroleum engineering with a minor in geology. She believes in the importance of seeking a sustainable future by taking action today and remaining environmentally conscious. Her focus of study was how to reduce the impact of organic waste with an emphasis on composting and education. .
Ozzy, raised in Texas City, TX, is a Mechanical Engineering junior at the University of Houston graduating in Sping 2017. He is the initial founder of the group with primary focus in the product waste division and promoting the “Waste Tax” portion of the policy. Further work responsibilities included the website design and project documents needed throughout the semester. He plans to expand his career into product design and materials recovery while also minoring in Energy and Sustainabiltiy.
Oziel Garcia
Carlos Gonzalez is a Venezuelan junior student at the University of Houston majoring in Petroleum Engineering. He found interest in Energy and Sustainability after a friend recommended the class. He contributed to the product waste portion of this project and the Long term contract to plastic industry portion of the policy paper.

Zoraida is a junior currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Liberal Studies with specific study in three minors: Energy & Sustainability, Interdisciplinary Arts, and Interpersonal Communication. Her role in the group included research on paper recycling with focus on social and environmental factors. As part of the product waste division, she helped in the introduction section of the group’s policy paper.

Randall Mayhall
Randall Mayhall, a New Orleans, LA native is a Finance (Global Energy Management Track) student at the University of Houston. His interest in Energy and Sustainability comes from family ties to the energy sector. He plans to graduate December 2017. His project focus was the anaerobic digestion of food waste at Waste Water Treatment Plants, collective study on the organic waste stream, and editing the final proposed policy document.
Jason Pate
Jason is a petroleum engineering student at the University of Houston and will graduate in December 2017. He contributed to the organic waste portion of this project, specifically involving the proposal to upgrade the waste water treatment plant.
Esmeralda Umanzor
Esmeralda is a sophomore from Cypress, TX pursuing a bachelors in Chemical Engineering. Duties included research into plastic with emphasis on the energy, technology, policies, and economics concerning plastics and how it relates to Houston’s recycling efforts. She also contributed towards the multi-stream collection sub section of the group’s policy paper.
